How to Apply for a Canadian Student Visa in 2026

Canada is one of the top choices for Bangladeshi students, and for good reason. Affordable tuition, strong post-graduation work options, and a clear path to permanent residency make it hard to beat. But the study permit application process has changed in recent years, so here is exactly what you need to do in 2026.

Before You Apply: What You Need Ready

You cannot apply for a Canadian study permit without an acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). Start by applying to universities or colleges in Canada. Once accepted, you will receive a Letter of Acceptance (LOA), which is required for your permit application.

You also need a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL). This is a newer requirement introduced in 2024. Your institution or the province where your school is located will issue this. Without a PAL, your study permit application will not be processed.

Documents You Will Need

Gather these documents before starting your application: a valid passport, your Letter of Acceptance, your Provincial Attestation Letter, proof of funds (bank statements showing you can cover tuition and at least CAD 20,635 per year for living expenses), passport-sized photos, academic transcripts and certificates (SSC, HSC, or Bachelor's degree), IELTS or equivalent English test scores, and a Statement of Purpose explaining why you want to study in Canada and why you chose your program.

For proof of funds, Canadian immigration wants to see that the money has been in your account for a reasonable period. A sudden large deposit right before applying can raise questions. If a sponsor is funding your education, you will also need a letter from them along with their bank statements.

Step 1: Create Your IRCC Account

Go to the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website and create an account. You can apply online through your IRCC account, which is faster than paper applications. The system will guide you through which documents to upload.

Step 2: Fill Out the Application Forms

You will need to fill out the study permit application form (IMM 1294) and the family information form (IMM 5645). Answer every question honestly. Inconsistencies between your application and your documents are one of the most common reasons for rejection.

Step 3: Pay the Fees and Submit

The study permit application fee is CAD 150, and biometrics cost an additional CAD 85. You will need a credit or debit card that works for international transactions. After paying, submit your application with all documents uploaded.

Step 4: Biometrics and Medical Exam

After submitting, you will receive a Biometric Instruction Letter. You have 30 days to give your fingerprints and photo at a designated collection point. In Dhaka, you can do this at the VFS Global centre.

You may also need a medical exam, especially if you plan to study for more than six months. Only doctors on the IRCC panel can do this exam, so book early as appointments fill up fast.

Step 5: Wait for Processing

Processing times from Bangladesh typically range from 8 to 16 weeks, though this can vary. You can check your application status through your IRCC account. Do not book flights until you have your approval.

If approved, you will receive a Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction. This is not your study permit. You will get your actual study permit when you arrive at a Canadian airport and go through immigration.

Common Mistakes Bangladeshi Students Make

Insufficient proof of funds is the number one reason for rejection. Make sure your bank statements clearly show enough money to cover your first year of tuition plus living expenses.

A weak Statement of Purpose is another common issue. Be specific about why you chose Canada, why that particular program, and how it connects to your career plans back home or in Canada. Generic statements get rejected.

Finally, applying too late is a problem. Start your application at least four to five months before your program begins. This gives you enough time for processing, biometrics, medical exams, and visa stamping.

What Happens After Approval

Once approved, you will need to submit your passport for visa stamping. Then start preparing for departure: arrange accommodation, set up a Canadian bank account (some banks let you do this from Bangladesh), and attend a pre-departure briefing if your consultancy offers one.
