Studying in the UK vs Australia: Which is Right for You?

The UK and Australia are both popular choices for Bangladeshi students, but they are quite different in cost, lifestyle, and what happens after you graduate. Here is an honest comparison to help you decide which one fits you better.

Tuition Fees

In the UK, most Master's programs cost between GBP 12,000 and GBP 25,000 per year. Since a Master's degree takes only one year in the UK, your total tuition cost is lower than in many other countries.

In Australia, tuition ranges from AUD 20,000 to AUD 45,000 per year. A Master's typically takes two years, so you are looking at double that in total tuition. However, two-year programs give you more time to gain practical experience through internships and part-time work.

Bottom line: the UK is cheaper for a Master's degree overall, but Australia gives you more time in the country.

Living Costs

The UK requires you to show GBP 1,334 per month (London) or GBP 1,023 per month (outside London) for visa purposes. Actual costs in cities like Manchester or Birmingham are lower than London.

Australia requires proof of AUD 29,710 per year (about AUD 2,476 per month) for living expenses. Cities like Adelaide and Brisbane are more affordable than Sydney or Melbourne.

Both countries are expensive compared to Bangladesh, but your part-time work income can cover a good portion of living costs in either country.

Part-Time Work While Studying

In the UK, international students on a Tier 4 visa can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during holidays.

In Australia, student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during academic sessions and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks.

In practice, both countries offer similar work opportunities. Minimum wages are higher in Australia (around AUD 24 per hour) compared to the UK (around GBP 11.50 per hour), though living costs in Australia are also higher.

Post-Study Work Visa

This is where the differences matter most for long-term planning.

The UK offers the Graduate Route visa, which gives you 2 years to work in the UK after completing your degree (3 years for PhD graduates). You do not need a job offer to get this visa.

Australia offers the Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate visa. For Bachelor's and Master's (coursework) graduates, this gives up to 2 years. PhD holders get up to 3 years. You generally need to be under 35 to apply.

Both are good options, but Australia's pathway to Permanent Residency through the points-based system is more established. If staying long-term is your priority, Australia may have the edge.

University Rankings and Reputation

The UK has 4 universities in the global top 10 (Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL). If university prestige matters for your career plans, the UK has a slight advantage at the very top.

Australia has 7 universities in the global top 100, and they are consistently strong in fields like engineering, health sciences, and environmental studies. The Group of Eight universities are well recognized by employers worldwide.

For most Bangladeshi students, both countries offer degrees that employers respect globally. Unless you are targeting a very specific top-5 program, the difference in reputation is small.

Climate and Lifestyle

The UK has mild but cloudy weather. Winters are cold and dark, especially in northern cities. If you are used to Dhaka's climate, the adjustment can be tough.

Australia has a warmer, sunnier climate that feels more familiar to students from South Asia. The outdoor lifestyle and multicultural cities (especially Melbourne and Sydney) have large Bangladeshi communities.

This is a personal preference, but students who struggle with cold, grey weather should take it seriously. It affects your wellbeing and academic performance.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose the UK if: you want a shorter, cheaper Master's program, you are targeting a top-ranked university, or you want to enter industries like finance, law, or consulting where UK credentials carry extra weight.

Choose Australia if: you want more time to gain work experience while studying, you are looking for a clearer path to permanent residency, you prefer a warmer climate, or you are studying nursing, engineering, IT, or social work (fields with strong demand in Australia).
